Essential Job Functions: The first priority of all members of the NSU Law team is to serve the Law Center’s students, faculty, and patrons. Each team member will not be limited by this job description in an effort to assist our constituency, but will perform tasks assigned by supervisor(s). Team members will be readily available, visible, and accessible to students, faculty, and patrons, and if unable to answer an inquiry, they will ensure assistance is provided by another member of the NSU Law team.

1. Maintains current knowledge of program requirements, course requirements, and sequencing, and establishes and maintains relationships with program faculty.
2. Tracks and monitors student academic progress for assigned program(s) or cohorts.
3. Reviews, resolves, and communicates decisions regarding extensions of time to complete coursework in accordance with established policies and procedures.
4. Advises students on issues such as course selection, progress toward graduation, and career decisions.
5. Counsels students regarding educational issues, such as course and program selection, class scheduling and registration. May conduct exit interviews for student withdrawals.
6. Counsels students regarding educational issues, as course and program selection, progress toward graduation, and career decisions. May conduct exit interviews for student withdrawals.
7. Counsels individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioral problems affecting their educational situations.
8. Reviews degree plans to ensure that students meet graduation requirements. Advises students on continuing graduate requirements.
9. Reviews degree plans to ensure that students meet graduation requirements. Advises students on graduate medical education (residency) entrance requirements.
10. Refers students to degree programs and concentrations.
11. Provides students with information on topics, such as college degree programs, admission requirements, and financial aid opportunities.
12. Assesses needs for assistance, such as rehabilitation, financial aid, or additional training, and refers clients to the appropriate services.
13. Participates in recruitment and enrollment activities.
14. Prepares reports on outreach to students and activities as required by administration.
15. Maintains accurate and complete student records as required by laws, policies, and administrative regulations.
16. Attends meetings, educational conferences, and training workshops and serves on committees.
17. Completes special projects as assigned.
18. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Marginal Job Functions: 1. Interprets requests, and determines action plan for important and emergency matters.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge:
1. Customer and Personal Service - General knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
2. Psychology – General knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
3. Therapy and Counseling – General knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
4. Foreign Language – Working knowledge of the structure and content of a foreign (non-English) language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, and pronunciation.

1. Active Listening – Proficient skills in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to under the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
2. Speaking – Proficient skills in talking to others to convey information effectively.
3. Reading Comprehension – Proficient understanding of written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
4. Social Perceptiveness – Proficient skills in being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
5. Critical Thinking – Proficient skills in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
6. Writing – Proficient skills in communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
7. Judgment and Decision Making – Proficient skills in considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the appropriate one.
8. Service Orientation – Proficient skills in actively looking for ways to help people.
9. General skills in using of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel).


Abilities:
1. Deductive Reasoning - The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
2. Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
3. Inductive Reasoning - The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (including finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
1. Speech Recognition - Must be able to identify and understand the speech of another person.
2. Speech Clarity - Must be able to speak clearly so others can understand you.
3. Near Vision – Must be able to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
4. Travel – Must be able to travel on a daily basis and/or overnight basis.
5. May be required to work nights or weekends.
6. May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
7. May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, to include but not limited to pens, pencils, and computer keyboards.

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree
Major (if required):  
Required Experience: Two (2) to five (5) years of student advising experience in an academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree and up to two years of student advising experience.
