Primary Purpose:

Provides a leadership role in overseeing the College's research and scholarship. Works with faculty to develop, facilitate and obtain new revenue streams through grants and other resources that will enhance the College's research activities as well as promote and increase visibility of those efforts.

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Provides leadership and oversight for the research mission in the college. Crafts the research and scholarship mission.
2. Evaluates new research center opportunities.
3. Manages college-level indirect cost recovery, researches restricted accounts, and researches operational and capital budgets.
4. Collaborates with the appropriate dean’s office staff on space/facilities issues as they intersect with research needs.
5. Build additional infrastructure in the college to support the research mission across all divisions.
6. Engages with the college’s research centers in developing and implementing goals and generating strategic plans and annual reports.
7. Interacts with the VPR, OSP, and the IRB on behalf of the college, manages their faculty appointees.
8. Mentors faculty (especially junior faculty) on research career issues.
9. Works with faculty and administration to develop, facilitate and obtain new revenue streams through grants and other resources that will enhance the college’s research activities. Specific areas of emphasis include expanding interdisciplinary and translational research, facilitating research infrastructure, and developing expertise necessary to support successful competition for research funding.
10. Leads and implements training and development opportunities to promote faculty success in acquiring research and fellowship support.
11. Facilitates the submission of proposals and coordinate the post-award administration of grants and contracts as needed.
12. Advocates with University Research Administration on behalf of college research efforts.
13. Develops, implements, and oversees the Dean’s priority programs related to research.
14. Manages start-up packages for new faculty hires in collaboration with department heads and the Assistant Dean of Finance.
15. Collaborates with the Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs and the Director of Undergraduate Research to enhance support for student research.
16. Manages college funding programs for research (Faculty Research & Professional Development, Faculty Fellow Program, research-based Sabbaticals).
17. Oversees faculty research awards (PRGs etc.)
18. Reviews and approves Conflict of Interest Disclosures.
19. Serves as the Coordinating Official for Federal Student Fellowships.
20. Works with NSU lobbyists and legal teams for political advocacy locally and nationally.
21. Recruits and stewards research donors and foundations in conjunction with advancement.
22. Provides presentations on OC and College research internally and in the community to cultivate connections and increase branding awareness.
23. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Requirements: 1. Record of academic and research excellence commensurate with the expectations of a major research university.
2. Demonstrated success in pursuing and leading research and engagement activities.
3. Demonstrated success in research responsibilities.
4. History of administrative experience, including budgetary matters, experience in resource allocation processes, and personnel management.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge:
1. Administration and Management - General knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, budgeting, human resources modeling, leadership technique, and/or coordination of people and resources.

2. Personnel and Human Resources - General knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, and personnel information systems.

4. Education and Training - Thorough knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
5. Customer and Personal Service - General knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of user satisfaction.

Required Certifications/Licensures: 

Required Education: Doctoral Degree

Major (if required: Marine Biology or related field

Required Experience: 1. Ten (10) or more years of related experience.
2. Record of academic and research excellence commensurate with the expectations of a major research university.
3. Demonstrated success in pursuing and leading research and engagement activities.
4. Demonstrated success in research responsibilities.
5. History of administrative experience, including budgetary matters, experience in resource allocation processes, and personnel management.

FACULTY RANK

For Assistant Professor:
1. Possess a Doctoral or terminal degree in the field. *
2. Should possess college-level teaching experience.
3. Demonstrate clear promise of a successful career in teaching, scholarship, and service.

For Associate Professor:
1. Possess a Doctoral or terminal degree. *
2. Demonstrate continued professional growth** and success in full-time university teaching,
research/scholarship, and service at the rank of Assistant Professor. In unusual cases, an outstanding
record in only one of these activities and an adequate record in the others may be considered sufficient.
3. Demonstrate significant scholarly or scholarship/research contributions to the University, higher
education, or the candidate’s academic area(s) of specialization that have received peer recognition.
4. Possess 4 years of full-time university faculty experience at the rank of Assistant Professor.

For Professor:
1. Possess a Doctoral or terminal degree. *
2. Demonstrate continuing professional growth** and success in full-time university teaching,
scholarship, and service.
3. Must have achieved distinction through significant scholarship or scholarship/research contributions to
the University, higher education, or the candidate’s academic area(s) of specialization that have received
substantial peer recognition.
4. Through their professional accomplishments, demonstrate exemplary service to NSU and the
profession at the national level.
Possess a minimum of 5 years of full-time university experience at the rank of Associate Professor.
