Primary Purpose:

Provides superior customer service by advising potential and enrolled international students and scholars regarding regulatory compliance. Facilitates student success by ensuring compliance and resolving student issues interfering with admission, enrollment, and graduation.

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) or Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) for F-1 visas.
2. Works with the university SEVIS Compliance Officer and OISS Front Desk staff to gather information, provide reports, and take appropriate action regarding the maintenance of F-1 student and J-1 student and scholar statuses.
3. Provides customized presentations and services to university offices and academic programs.
4. Serves as trainer and mentor for junior employees.
5. Tracks and monitors student immigration status for assigned program(s) or cohorts.
6. Advises students and management regarding immigration and student authorization regulations, issues, and strategies, and facilitates visa application processing.
7. Participates in the planning and conducting of orientation and workshops.
8. Acts as liaison between students, faculty, college and university departments, and government agencies.
9. Counsels individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social, multicultural, or behavioral problems affecting their educational situations.
10. Reviews transcripts and class registrations to ensure maintenance of students' immigration status.
11. Provides students with information on topics, such as college degree programs, admission requirements, and financial aid opportunities.
12. Assesses needs for assistance, such as rehabilitation, financial aid, or additional training, and refers clients to the appropriate services.
13. Prepares reports on outreach to students and activities as required by administration.
14. Maintains accurate and complete student records as required by laws, policies, and administrative regulations.
15. Acts as a subject matter expert for assigned system(s).
16. Oversees the daily performance of assigned computer system(s).
17. Operates spreadsheet programs and other types of software to load and manipulate data and to produce reports.
18. Retrieves, separates and sorts program output as needed, and sends data to specified users.
19. Develops and implements processes and reports to audit data quality, ensure accuracy, and increase productivity.
20. Maintains data integrity and confidentiality.
21. Maintains or monitors departmental and/or program websites.
22. Attends meetings, educational conferences, and training workshops and serves on committees.
23. Ensures compliance with university policies and procedures; county, state, federal, and international regulations; professional association guidelines; and accreditation requirements.
24. Prepares, updates, and monitors SEVIS I-17 documentation, and assists with reaccreditation.
25. Arranges, documents, processes, approves, and monitors Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) applications, and submits to federal authorities.
26. Completes special projects as assigned.
27. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

5.4. Law and Government - General knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.

4. Travel - Must be able to travel on a daily and/or overnight basis.
5. May be required to work nights or weekends.

7. May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, to include but not limited to pens, pencils, and computer keyboards.

Required Certifications/Licensures: 

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree

Major (if required: 

Required Experience: Three (3) or more years of student advising experience in an academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. Experience working with Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and other international student management systems (such as
Ellucian or ISSM).
2. Bilingual
3. Certified Notary Public
4. Master’s Degree
5. Prior experience working with M, F & J visas.
