Job Title: Librarian I - Youth Services

Essential Job Functions: 1. Provides reference and readers advisory service to NSU-affiliated library users and Broward County users in person, by phone, and via computer.

2. Assists library users in the use and interpretation of the library collections and in identifying and accessing appropriate materials.

3. Provides instruction on the use of in-house and online library resources.

4. Creates and implements programs for the educational, cultural, and recreational needs of youth; incorporating developmental best practices and Florida State Standards.

5. Participates in collection development activities to recommend selection and weeding of library materials.

6. Promotes the enjoyment of reading, family literacy and the importance of library card ownership.

7. Assists with annual assessment of programs and services.

8. May be expected to assume responsibility for supervision of volunteers and/or student employees.
Marginal Job Functions: 1. Participates in department, library, and university-wide committees as needed.

2. Attends appropriate NSU library and/or Broward County Library meetings.

3. Keeps current with recent developments/trends in library services for youth.

4. Participates in outreach as assigned.

5. Participates in creating flyers, booklists, displays and other library information for youth and parents.

6. Acts as liaison to campus and community schools and agencies, and provide resources to campus and area schools, including curriculum-related outreach, technology training, and field trips.

7. Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 1. Knowledge and understanding of library principles, practices and techniques.
2. Current computer skills, including online searching.
3. Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
4. Ability to utilize library electronic resources which may include creating electronic booklists, special departmental resources in area of specialty, using social media, contributing to library webpage content.
5. Ability to cross-train in all developmental areas and age groups in the Youth Services client base.
6. Ability to cross-train in providing reference and readers advisory across age groups served.
7. Ability to work weekend and evening hours as needed.
Job Requirements: Weekend and evening hours are required.
Required Certifications/Licensures:  
Required Education: Master's Degree
Major (if required):  
Required Experience: Master's in Library Science from an ALA Accredited school.
Preferred Qualifications: 1. Prior service to school age children in a library.
2. Prior service to children of preschool age.
3. Coursework in literature for children.
