Primary Purpose:

Develops strategies to enhance student retention and success by designing student-centered operations that address the academic and personal needs of all students. Oversees the achievement of student learning outcomes and all student-related activities, such as but not limited to, retention, special projects, events, organizations/clubs, and professional socialization. Works in conjunction with the EMSA Director of Graduate Admissions and the admissions team for the college. Represents the college when interacting with external organizations and with various university administrators that deal with student-life policies and procedures.

Provides high quality instruction in field of expertise to ensure students meet course and program outcomes. Collaborates with college staff and colleagues to improve students' learning experience, as well as conducting research or scholarship to advance knowledge. Provides service for the benefit of internal and external communities.

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Develops strategies to enhance student retention and success by designing student-centered operations that address the academic and personal needs of all students to help ensure the achievement of student learning outcomes.

2. Oversees all student-related activities, such as but not limited to, retention, special projects, events, organizations/clubs, and professional socialization.

3. Works in conjunction with the EMSA Director of Graduate Admissions and the admissions team for the college, supports recruitment efforts of the admissions team, and serves as Chair of the College of Optometry Committee on Admissions.

4. Meets with optometry applicants during weekly interviews and assists the Dean in providing an overview of the College of Optometry and answering questions from candidates and their parents.

5. Represents the college when interacting with external organizations and with various university administrators that deal with student-life policies and procedures.

6. Reviews transfer applications to the College and makes recommendations to the Dean.

7. Advises students who are in academic peril, have emotional distress, and/or have medical conditions that may affect their academic performance. Coordinates with the student-counseling center regarding voluntary and mandated student therapy.

8. Maintains constant accessibility to address emergent student and faculty problems that affect student life, policies, and procedures.

9. Acts as the student liaison and assists students in the preparation of cases to be reviewed by Student Performance Advisory Committee (SPAC) and the Appeals Board of the College of Optometry.

10. Oversees retention, attrition, and graduation rates and develops strategies to meet college program goals and regularly reports these to the Dean.

11. Oversees the student class rosters for timely updates and accuracy. Assign students to lab groups and NSUCO Societies.

12. Grants or denies requests for excused absences.

13. Periodically meets with students in the non-traditional optometry programs to ensure their special needs are addressed and accommodated.

14. Participates in the planning of first year orientation, in all aspects of orientation week, and the senior graduation luncheon.

15. Administers the graduating class exit survey and reports results to the Dean.

16. Serves as advisor to the Optometry student government and all other student-specific organizations and attends student meetings; works in conjunction with faculty advisors for student clubs; advise the Dean on all student organizations/clubs.

17. Represents the college at various meetings and conferences. Represents the college in the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) Student Affairs/Admissions Professional group and interacts with other student affairs officers from other colleges when necessary.

18. Serves as advisor to undergraduate students enrolled in the dual admit program.

19. Completes other projects as assigned.

20. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

2. The ability to communicate effectively with others in English in both technical and non-technical language, both orally and in writing.
3. Education and Training - General knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
4. English Language - Thorough knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

4. Travel - must be able to travel on a daily and/or overnight basis.
5. May be required to work nights or weekends.

7. May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, to include but not limited to pens, pencils, and computer keyboards.

Required Certifications/Licensures: 

Required Education: Doctoral Degree (For Professor ranks) or M.S./M.A. (For Instructor rank)

Major (if required: 

Required Experience: Professional doctoral-level teaching experience or have residency training or equivalent.

Assistant Professor: Continued professional growth and success in full-time university teaching for one (1) year at the rank of Instructor or equivalent experience; scholarly contributions to the university, higher education, or one's academic area(s) of specialization that have received peer recognition. Must meet the current criteria for rank set forth by the faculty Evaluation and Promotions Committee.

Associate Professor: Continued professional growth and success in full-time university teaching for five (5) years at the rank of Assistant Professor; scholarly contributions to the university, higher education, or one's academic area(s) of specialization that have received peer recognition. Must meet the current criteria for rank set forth by the faculty Evaluation and Promotions Committee.

Professor: Continued professional growth and success in full-time university teaching for five (5) years at the rank of Associate Professor; scholarly contributions to the university, higher education, or one's academic area(s) of specialization that have received peer recognition. Must meet the current criteria for rank set forth by the faculty Evaluation and Promotions Committee.
