Primary Purpose:

Assists the Field Project Manager in all duties from scheduling and staff management to executing all permitted activities related to the project permit and associated contract. Supervises and manages research assistants. Design and manage all aspects of community and educational outreach activities that relate to the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program.

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Supervises and manages research assistants; trains new assistants to properly locate, identify, and relocate marine turtle nests.

2. Ensures that all Broward beaches are properly patrolled each morning from March 1st through October 31st annually.

3. Creates, implements, and manages the scheduling and execution of all outreach activities related to the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program, including, but not limited to, educational talks, community events, in-field environmental interpretation, etc., with the emphasis on effective engagement that communicates sea turtle biology, life histories, and conservation concerns to inspire realistic conservation actions in the public.

4. Provides timely updates to Broward County, NSU and other stakeholders identified in the contract, reporting periods and requirements will be communicated by faculty member or Principle Investigator

5. Works on and contributes to collaborative research teams.

6. Conducts all sea turtle activities in accordance with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Marine Turtle Conservation Guidelines and Broward County Contract specifications

7. Coordinates and assists the Field Manager in conducting post hatching nest evaluations to determine hatching and emergence success.

8. Helps prepare monthly progress reports for submission to the Broward County Department of Planning and Environmental Protection (BCDPEP).

9. Assists in the preparation of the final annual Technical Report to BCDPEP.

10. Monitors sea turtle hotline when designated by the manager.

11. Completes special projects as assigned.

12. Performs other duties as assigned or required

Job Requirements: 

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 1. Planning and organizational skills.

2. Knowledge of MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

3. Adept at public speaking to a variety of audiences.

4. Ability to design educational presentations in a variety of formats, including, but not limited to, PowerPoint presentations, table events, non-multimedia assisted presentations, press interviews, etc.

5. Ability to learn and utilize software relevant to the research program (ArcGIS, etc), new research methods and work routines quickly.

6. Ability to attain required certification for applicable research program or project.

7. Ability to read and comprehend reports and other scientific literature.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Ability to work in hot and inclement weather for extended periods of time.

2. Ability to ride an ATV on the beach to conduct nesting beach surveys.

3. Ability to lift at least 50lbs.

Required Certifications/Licensures: 

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree

Major (if required: 

Required Experience: Five (5) years of experience working with Broward County Sea Turtle Program or related Sea Turtle Program.
