Primary Purpose:

Provides career advisement to graduate students and alumni about choosing or changing a career direction, identifying career goals, establishing a plan of action, writing a resume or cover letter, preparing for an interview, conducting a job or internship search, and
other issues related to career planning process.

 

Job Category: Exempt

Hiring Range: $52,000

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Establishes a plan of action with the student/alumni working towards preparing for a successful career.

2. Provides career advising to individual students through career goal setting, formal and informal career exploration, and offers appropriate career-related resources both on and off campus. Delivers on-going support through the decision-making process.

3. Supports students in creating and developing their personal portfolio, cover letters, interviewing skills and other professional tools required to ultimately conduct a successful internship or job search.

4. Provides, administers, and evaluates various assessment tools to students/alumni to identify their career interests, preferred work environments, and how to make decisions about career choices.

5. Assists graduate and professional schools in generating a reputation of excellence within the university.

6. Assists with planning, promoting, and delivering workshops and seminars, and classroom outreach, on resume writing, interviewing techniques, job search strategies, business communication, employer expectations, networking and social media, and other career-related topics.

7. Contributes to the research of current trends and employers in all industries as it pertains to employment outlook and other areas that affect career decisions.

8. Assists in the organization, implementation, and coordination of department special events and programming.

9. Assists with the compiling and maintaining of data and assessment for surveys and reports.

10. Completes other projects as assigned.

11. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Requirements: 

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge:
1. Psychology - Working knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; and learning and motivation.
2. Counseling - Working knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for career counseling and guidance.
3. English Language - General knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
4. Education and Training – General knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.

2. Speaking - Proficient skills in talking to others to convey information effectively.

Abilities:
1. Deductive Reasoning - The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
2. Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
3. Inductive Reasoning - The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (including finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
1. Speech Recognition - Must be able to identify and understand the speech of another person.
2. Speech Clarity - Must be able to speak clearly so others can understand you.
3. Near Vision - Must be able to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
4. May be required to work nights or weekends.
5. Travel - Must be able to travel on a daily and/or overnight basis.
6. May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
7. May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, to include but not limited to pens, pencils, mobile devices, and computer keyboards.

Required Certifications/Licensures: 

Required Education: Bachelor's degree

Major (if required: 

Required Experience: Two (2) to four (4) years of professional advising experience in areas of career advisement, job placement, and/or counseling.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Master's degree.
