Essential Job Functions: | 1. Develops and delivers strategic, holistic messaging to support key internal and external communications priorities for the President. 2. Writes letters, event and video scripts, speeches, complex memos, editorials, web and social media content, and publications as required. 3. Produces bold, strategic, persuasive messages reflecting the tone and voice of the President, under the supervision of senior PR and marketing management. 4. Writes copy for public relations that supports branding and positioning. 5. Responsible for managing the President’s web pages and social media channels, creating and producing/posting compelling, strategic messages using text, images, video and other digital techniques to raise visibility, perceived prestige and impact of the President’s voice and vision among internal and external audiences. 6. Collaborates with social media teams to design, track and assess key performance indicators for the effectiveness and reach of the President’s communications (written, email, web, social) to elevate awareness and affinity of the President. 7. Produces compelling content that meets specific objectives for target audiences and generates awareness and interest in the University. 8. Writes and self-edits for quality, consistency, clarity, brevity, accuracy, and readability. 9. Collaborates closely and effectively with University leaders, marketing teams, and external stakeholders to drive authentic, consistent, and compelling messaging and strategic content for all presidential and other executive communications assignments. 10. Develops compelling stories that effectively communicate with targeted audiences about specific interests. 11. Implements storytelling and journalism practices to develop and distribute valuable content and other assignments as needed. 12. Adheres to deadlines, works well with others in providing guidance and counsel, and exercises flexibility in work hours to accommodate the schedules of those that need to be interviewed for stories or work events that are assigned for coverage. 13. Works proactively and ideates creative ways to elevate the Office of the President without being asked and under tight turnaround times. 14. Maintains confidentiality on all prospective matters. 15. Adheres to policies and procedures, with ability to recommend changes and develop alternatives when and if necessary. 16. Completes special projects as assigned. 17. Performs other duties as assigned or required. |
Marginal Job Functions: | 1. May be asked to write and edit tight, impactful copy for press releases and contributed content. 2. May serve as editor for the writing done by others on behalf of the department to ensure that the University’s style is consistent and the information is accurate. 3. Handles diverse work settings and works effectively with both senior and junior staff. 4. Pays attention to detail and excellence in all areas of the creative and editorial process. |
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: | Knowledge: 1. English Language - Thorough knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. 2. Communications and Media - Thorough knowledge of media production, visual, verbal, and interactive communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and persuade via written, oral, and visual media storytelling. Proven track record of processing complex information and creating clear, concise messaging under tight deadlines. Experience advising on and creating and executing crisis communications plans under high pressure. 3. Marketing - General knowledge of principles and methods for describing and promoting programs and services in order to achieve desired outcomes. 4. Customer and Personal Service - General knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of user satisfaction. 5. Advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 6. General knowledge of standard Adobe Suite. Skills: 1. Writing - Advanced skills in communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience and demonstrated ability to explain complex concepts to a wide audience, as well as to targeted audiences. 2. Time Management - Advanced skills in managing one's own time, the time of others, and adjusting schedules rapidly to meet the needs of the institution while meeting deadlines. 3. Critical Thinking - Advanced skills in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. 4. Travel - Must be able to travel on a daily and/or overnight basis. 5. May be required to work nights or weekends. 6. Required Experience: | 1. Four (4) to seven (7) years of executive communications experience. 2. Excellent oral and written communication skills including expertise in writing and editing an assortment of communications materials. 3. Demonstrated ability to write speeches and/or articles of interest to a wide variety of publics for consumption by local and national as well as international print and electronic media. 4. Demonstrated experience in writing for a variety of media channels, such as web, e-news, email blasts, social media, video (script writing), events/appearances and print publications. 5. Comfortable user of social media and other information technology tools, such as list serves, web editing (WordPress), project scheduling systems, email software (Constant Contact, Blackboard), social media, or time accounting systems. 6. Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret speaking opportunities related to positioning the University and the preparation of speeches and talking points to meet these objectives. |
