Essential Job Functions: 1. Plans, directs, supervises and coordinates work of subordinates and staff, including hiring, coaching, evaluating, and terminating.
2. Directly supervises the two-person public relations/internal communications team and the two-person social media team.
3. Provides managerial oversight to improve departmental efficiency, manage priorities, direct workflow, ensure consistent high-quality communications standards, and track and report on meaningful performance measures.
4. Develops and implements innovative, strategic, proactive and results-driven methods to significantly expand the university’s visibility and positive public profile by pitching and placing stories with influential media oulets and/or through direct distribution to opinion leaders and target audiences.
5. Uses emerging technologies and techniques to develop, package and deliver compelling story ideas and content through an array of channels and methods to influence target audiences, including through the use of social media, influence campaigns and direct distribution methods.
6. Mentors direct reports, co-workers and university colleagues to help them become more capable reporters, able to mine story ideas and package them into effective news and communications content for today’s diverse media mix to foster awareness of and support for NSU and its contributions through more powerful news and social media coverage.
7. Conducts outreach to build relationships and be the senior conduit to journalists, reporters, producers and writers at key local, regional, trade and national outlets, both traditional news media outlets as well as through use of emerging digital news outlets, blogs, podcasts and influencers.
8. Provides leadership in leveraging strategic use of owned social media channels to build visibility and position the university as a valuable contributor in key areas, making it more attractive and engaging for prospective and current students and families, alumni, donors and prospects, and research or health care partners.
9. Leads routine and weather-related crisis communications response team and partners with Vice President and Assistant Vice President on high-level safety or reputational crises as needed. Familiar with provisions, protocols and institutional responsibilities related to the Clery Act, Title IX and other higher education regulations.
10. Manages budget, vendor selection and oversight, and essential PR/social media systems or software products, as well as periodic use of freelancers or agencies for special projects or needs.
11. Develops comprehensive visibility and influence campaigns that reach opinion leaders and target audiences through a mix of paid, earned, social and owned media strategies and tactics, primarily to build NSU’s visibility in education, research and health care.
12. Formulates, directs and coordinates public relations activities or policies to promote university initiatives to internal and external publics, working with other experts or stakeholders in the division, across the university or outside the university.
13. Collaborates with the division’s Web team to write, develop, update, evaluate and enhance NSU’s Web presence, and manages and produces Web content for NSU Newsroom and other key websites, including timely posts promoting the division’s capabilities, guidelines, standards and procedures.
14. Acts as primary liaison for the president’s initiatives for belonging, equity, diversity and inclusion, providing support for promoting diversity events and messaging and maintaining the diversity Web presence.
15. Collaborates with the division’s analytics team to conduct periodic surveys and perception research studies or analyzes their findings to measure NSU’s standing among its key publics. Stays on top of trends in higher education, research and health care.
16. Writes and edits compelling content for news stories, publications, social media, websites, video stories, talking points, op-eds and other types of internal and external communications, traditional and digital.
17. Uses tracking, forecasting, performance metrics or strategic planning methods to ensure the university’s public relations and social media efforts are always at the leading edge of professional best practice and anticipate changing trends in today’s higher education and public landscape.
18. Provides media training and guidance to university faculty, researchers and administrators.
19. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: KNOWLEDGE:
1. Administration and Management - Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, budgeting, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

7. Digital Media - Knowledge of digital media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and persuade via digital, web, and social media.
