Primary Purpose:

Under direct supervision of a Principal Investigator or designee, supports moderately complex research activities. Supports academic excellence by ensuring the proper maintenance of laboratories for the use of students, faculty, and researchers.

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates work activities of subordinates and staff, including hiring, coaching, evaluating, and terminating.
2. Coordinates all aspects of assigned laboratories.
3. Acts as a specialist on laboratory research methods and equipment functions.
4. Monitors and supports the activities of students and employees to ensure that standard policies and practices are followed; enforces all lab safety protocols.
5. Educates users on safety protocols and appropriate storage of substances; disposes of chemical or biologic waste to ensure proper removal.
6. Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards.
7. Cleans, maintains, and prepares supplies and work areas.
8. Sets up, adjusts, calibrates, cleans, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory and field equipment.
9. Orders and inventories materials to maintain supplies.
10. Provides training and assistance in the use of equipment to ensure efficient usage.
11. Provides and maintains a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams and by conducting laboratory or facility safety audits.
12. Coordinates all aspects and daily activities of the Physical Oceanography laboratory, including administrative tasks and record keeping.
13. Completes special projects as assigned.
14. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
