Primary Purpose:
Manages an animal facility. Schedules animal procedures; coordinates and performs vet management and research support to include regulatory matters, surveillance, diagnostics and treatment of animals in the CCR.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates work activities of subordinates and staff, including hiring, coaching, evaluating, and terminating.
2. Coordinates all aspects of assigned laboratories.
3. Acts as a specialist on laboratory research methods and equipment functions.
4. Monitors and supports the activities of students and employees to ensure that standard policies and practices are followed; enforces all lab safety protocols.
5. Educates users on safety protocols and appropriate storage of substances; disposes of chemical or biologic waste to ensure proper removal.
6. Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards.
7. Cleans, maintains, and prepares supplies and work areas.
8. Sets up, adjusts, calibrates, cleans, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory and field equipment. Maintains laboratory, equipment, procedural & surgical facilities.
9. Orders and inventories materials to maintain supplies.
10. Provides training and assistance in the use of equipment to ensure efficient usage.
11. Provides and maintains a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams and by conducting laboratory or facility safety audits.
12. Maintains compliance with Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation, USDA regulations and OLAW.
13. Monitors regulatory training requirements to ensure animal bio safety and IACUC protocols.
14. Works with Scientific Director of Research Facilities to prepare for all inspections & program audits.
15. Performs basic IACUC administrative duties & interface with NSU leadership to coordinate regulatory documentation & activities.
16. Develops, coordinates, and documents veterinary technical, procedural and research support including, but not limited to infectious agent inoculation, phlebotomy, minor and major surgery, implant maintenance, imaging, euthanasia, necropsy, tissue harvesting, IV, SC and oral treatments.
17. Documents & communicates observations made and tasks performed to ensure compliance with both internal and external regulations.
18. Provides accurate and detailed entries into medical records, husbandry logs, illness reports, post-procedural sheets, enrichment documents, etc. as indicated for each component service rendered.
19. Maintains laboratory, equipment, procedural and surgical facilities as directed by the Scientific Director Research Facilities.
20. Assists in monitoring all regulatory training requirements, ensuring compliance of all animal bio-safety and IACUC protocols.
21. Coordinates & performs vet management & research support to include care, surveillance, diagnostics & treatment of animals in CCR. Daily medical surveillance including detailed clinical health observation, behavioral & activity assessment.
22. Performs diagnostic evaluations under the direction of assigned facility veterinarian.
23. Provides data for grant applications, reports, strategy meetings and standard operating procedures (SOP). Assist the PI(s) with preparation of data reports necessary for new and continuing grant applications.
24. Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), oversees and determines daily work flow of operations and technician's duties/scheduling.
25. Completes special projects as assigned.
26. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Job Requirements:
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge:
1. Biology - Working knowledge of plant and animal organisms, their tissues, cells, functions, interdependencies, and interactions with each other and the environment.
2. Chemistry - Working knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.

Required Certifications/Licensures: Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification.
Required Education: Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience: 1. Bachelor's degree and three (3) or more years of research laboratory experience in a vivarium.
--OR--
Master's degree and one (1) year of research laboratory experience in a vivarium.
2. Minimum two (2) years of animal supervisory experience.
3. Minimum one (1) year working in Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AALAC) accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree and one (1) year of research laboratory experience in a vivarium.
