Primary Purpose:

Provides strategic leadership in the design, implementation, and administration of compensation programs that support the university’s mission, values, and strategic goals. Oversees workforce planning efforts, develops and maintains compensation policies, and leads recognition and rewards initiatives to attract, retain, and engage faculty and staff. Collaborates with academic and administrative leaders to ensure equitable, competitive, and compliant compensation practices across the institution.

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Develops and maintains compensation structures and policies that reflect the university’s values and support institutional goals.
2. Conducts market analyses and benchmarking to ensure competitive and equitable compensation for faculty, staff, and administrators.
3. Oversees job classification, salary administration, and pay equity reviews.
4. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines.
5. Partners with HR colleagues and university leadership to support strategic workforce planning and organizational design.
6. Analyzes workforce data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for proactive talent planning.
7. Advises on compensation implications of staffing changes, reorganizations, and new initiatives.
8. Designs, manages, and evaluates recognition and rewards programs that reinforce institutional values and desired outcomes.
9. Recommends enhancements to improve employee engagement, retention, and performance.
10. Serves as a subject matter expert and advisor to university leadership on compensation-related matters.
11. Collaborates with finance, legal, and HR teams to ensure consistency and compliance across programs.
12. Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates work activities of subordinates and staff, including hiring, coaching, evaluating, and terminating, all in accordance with university policies and procedures.
13. Completes special projects as assigned.
14. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Requirements: 

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge:
1. Deep understanding of compensation structures, job evaluation methodologies, and pay equity principles within complex organizations.
2. Familiarity with academic and administrative compensation frameworks, including faculty and staff classifications.
3. Knowledge of strategic workforce planning, organizational design, and talent forecasting in a university context.
4. Understanding of federal, state, and institutional regulations related to compensation, employment, and reporting.

Skills:
1. Skills in data analysis, market benchmarking, and compensation modeling.
2. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills; effective in engaging diverse stakeholders across academic and administrative units.
3. Skilled in drafting, revising, and implementing compensation policies and procedures.
4. Capable of managing complex projects, timelines, and teams with attention to detail and outcomes.


Abilities:
1. Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and align compensation practices with institutional priorities.
2. Ability to apply equitable practices in compensation and workforce planning.
3. Ability to resolve complex compensation-related issues with fairness, discretion, and professionalism.
4. Ability to maintain high standards of confidentiality and ethical conduct in handling sensitive personnel matters.
5. Ability to navigate evolving institutional needs and external market conditions with agility and foresight.


Physical Requirements:
1. Near Vision - Must be able to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
2. Speech Recognition - Must be able to identify and understand the speech of another person.
3. Speech Clarity - Must be able to speak clearly so others can understand you.
4. Travel - Must be able to travel on a daily and/or overnight basis.
5. May be required to work nights or weekends.
6. May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
7. May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, to include but not limited to pens, pencils, and computer keyboards.

Required Certifications/Licensures: 

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field

Major (if required: 

Required Experience: 1. 12+ years of progressive experience in compensation.
2. 5+ years of experience in a leadership role.

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. Experience in higher education.
2. Master’s degree.
3. Certified Compensation Professional (CCP).
